Today I saw you
On the sunny side
Of the road
Smiling and waving
Until a pedestrian jostled you
And you scuttled across
To join me the other side
A pool of gloom –
Shouldn’t have spoken
About Mother’s death –
Until you remembered
An urgent appointment
Escaping the nick of time
from the shady side,
to enjoy the rest of the day
in full sun,
your sunhat to protect you
from its overpowering rays.
